The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence: Balancing Innovation and Responsibility

This is an extended article based on the book Intelligence, from Natural Origins to Artificial Frontiers – Human Intelligence vs. Artificial Intelligence (Sfetcu 2024). As AI systems evolve and become more pervasive in our daily lives, the ethical considerations surrounding their development, deployment, and impact have come to the forefront. The ethics of artificial intelligence span a broad spectrum of issues, ranging from privacy and bias to accountability and the societal consequences of automation. This article delves into these ethical dimensions, highlighting the importance of adopting a balanced approach that encourages innovation while protecting human values and rights.

Threats of Artificial Intelligence for Cybersecurity

Artificial intelligence enables automated decision-making and facilitates many aspects of daily life, bringing with it improvements in operations and numerous other benefits. However, AI systems face numerous cybersecurity threats, and AI itself needs to be secured, as cases of malicious attacks have already been reported, e.g. AI techniques and AI-based systems can lead to unexpected results and can be modified to manipulate expected results. Therefore, it is essential to understand the AI threat landscape and to have a common and unifying basis for understanding the potential of threats and consequently to perform specific risk assessments. The latter will support the implementation of targeted and proportionate security measures and controls to counter AI-related threats. This article explores the potential threats posed by AI in cybersecurity and discusses the implications for individuals, organizations, and society at large.

Blockchain Design and Modelling

Ontology engineering, along with semantic Web technologies, allow the semantic development and modeling of the operational flow required for blockchain design. The semantic Web, in accordance with W3C, provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries, and can be seen as an integrator for various content, applications and information systems. The most widely used blockchain modelling system, by abstract representation, description and definition of structure, processes, information and resources, is the enterprises modelling. Enterprise modelling uses domain ontologies by model representation languages.

Big Data Ethics in Education and Research

Big data ethics involves adherence to the concepts of right and wrong behavior regarding data, especially personal data. Big Data ethics focuses on structured or unstructured data collectors and disseminators. Big data ethics is supported, at EU level, by extensive documentation, which seeks to find concrete solutions to maximize the value of big data without sacrificing fundamental human rights. The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) supports the right to privacy and the right to the protection of personal data in the respect of human dignity.
